Pros

Gravenberch’s pace is one of his most appealing qualities for a centre-back. He moves quickly across the ground, both in straight-line speed and recovery sprints.

His playmaking ability is another standout feature that sets him apart from many other defenders. Coming from a midfield background, Gravenberch is comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Defensively, Gravenberch is solid and intelligent. His tackling feels clean and well-timed, and he uses his body effectively to block off runs or shield the ball.

His medium/high work rates complement this well, he maintains discipline in his defensive duties, staying deeper and reading the game effectively.

His physicality is another strong point. Gravenberch is tall, strong and composed under pressure. He’s able to win shoulder-to-shoulder duels and hold off even the most powerful strikers.

Cons

The main area where Gravenberch falls short is his reactions. Compared to elite-tier defenders, his reaction time can sometimes feel a bit delayed when responding to sudden movements, quick one-twos, or deflections inside the box. Against agile strikers or rapid attacking sequences, this minor hesitation can occasionally result in being half a step late to a challenge or clearance.

Alternatives

Final Verdict

Overall, Gravenberch is a technically elegant yet physically dominant centre-back, strong, composed, and capable of controlling the tempo from deep. If you like centre-backs who can defend, distribute, and adapt to multiple playstyles, he’s a fantastic choice. He’s not just a wall at the back, he’s the foundation for smooth and intelligent build-up play.
