Pros

Exceptional pace for a CDM, allowing him to cover ground quickly. He can close down attackers, intercept passes, and recover in transition faster than most defensive midfielders.

One of the biggest strengths of Matthäus. His passing range is excellent, short, long, through balls, or switches of play.

Always alert in tight spaces and quick to step in when the ball breaks loose.

Elite-level defensive attributes. Strong in tackles, reliable in marking, and very good at cutting passing lanes.

Strong, balanced, and capable of holding his own in duels against even the most physical attackers.

Can run tirelessly for the full 90 minutes. Perfect for high pressing, box-to-box duties, and continuous defensive tracking.

Cons

High/High work rates, while it sounds good on paper, for a CDM this can sometimes be problematic. He’s best used if you are comfortable micromanaging your midfield positioning.

Value for in game coins and real life money, Like Zanetti, Matthäus is a brilliant player but not worth heavy investment.

Final Verdict

Lothar Matthäus is one of the most complete defensive midfielders you can get, fast, physical, intelligent, and an excellent passer. However, his high/high work rate can occasionally pull him out of position if left unchecked, add to that the fact that he’s expensive and will soon be power-crept by higher OVR cards, and it becomes hard to recommend him as a worthwhile purchase.
