Avantages
He won’t outrun full-backs, but his acceleration and top speed are perfectly adequate for a central creative midfielder.
Clinical in and around the box with his favored foot. Excellent placement, composure in one-on-one situations, and a reliable long-shot threat when given space to strike.
This is his headline skill. Riquelme slows or speeds tempo at will, choosing the right pass (through ball, weighted cross, or layoff). He’s an on-field metronome, position him where he has sightlines and he’ll orchestrate attacks.
Close control, calm in tight spaces, and excellent first touch. He holds possession under pressure, turns defenders with body feints, and threads passes that other CAMs can’t see.
Inconvénients
4 star weak foot, his left foot is usable but noticeably inferior. Expect him to prefer the right for shooting and key passes, which can make his decision-making slightly predictable if defenders force him onto his weaker side.
Medium/low work rates, he won’t press constantly or track back aggressively. Expect gaps in defensive coverage unless you pair him with industrious midfielders who cover the channels.
Not built for heavy running across 90 minutes at high intensity. He’ll fade late in matches, so consider managing his minutes or rotating him in packed fixture periods.
Alternatives

Verdict final
Riquelme is a premium playmaking specialist, sublime technique, elite vision, and a calming, creative influence. He changes games by dictating tempo and picking incisive passes rather than by physical dominance or relentless work-rate.
